The new restaurant model is designed to complement the chain’s 39 Souplantation and 81 Sweet Tomatoes full-scale buffet-style restaurants. Contrary to the existing buffet style of choosing salads, soups, pastas and baked goods, Sweet Tomatoes Express customers will point to what they would like to customize their salad with while an employee builds the selections into the customer’s custom salad. The menu will also feature five freshly made soups, macaroni and cheese, foccacia breads and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

The expansion of the Sweet Tomatoes Express concept will allow Garden Fresh to continue growing and increase their presence in the 15 states they currently have full-scale buffet-style restaurants. They will also look to expand their full scale restaurants in expanding markets.

“We are eager to see how our customers respond to the new Express concept,” said Garden Fresh CEO Michael Mack. “We have used what we learned from the first Souplantation Express to perfect the experience here and in other markets, but we’re also confident that this new Express format fits a need for our customers and we plan to open four more Express restaurants within the next 12 months, as well as eight of our full-scale buffet-style restaurant.”

The new quick-serve Express design can accommodate spaces as small as 1,500 square feet—compared to the existing buffet-style Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes model that requires over 7,000 square foot restaurant space—and is designed for potential entry into food courts, airports and even college campuses.

“The Express design enables us to extend our Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes brands to spaces we previously couldn’t accommodate due to size,” said Garden Fresh Vice President of Business Development Dan Anderson. “By launching Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes Express restaurants, we’ll be able to extend our brand of fresh, wholesome food and excellent customer service to more people, while also fitting into our customers’ busy lifestyles.”

  1. Hi
We usually frequent the original, Sweet Tomatoe’s in Henderson, NV.
We were disappointed in our first visit to the Sweet Tomatoe Express in Henderson, NV. on ll/18/11.
I was misinformed by the Manager on the phone regarding the concept of the salad bar, etc.
I was under the impression that the salad bar was not a one time visit, and we could go back for more.
The soup was very tiny (we got the Salad/soup buffet). We felt that the fact that we had to tell the attendants every item that we wanted on our salad, and them not being able to hear us with what we wanted, was annoying. We were told we would be able to serve ourselves.
We also thought that the add on’s , were not a good value.
Honestly, we don’t think we would return there again.
    Thank you

  2. We got word that one of these Express units will open in Clearwater Florida on May 29. From what I have read in the two previous comments I doubt that we will EVER go to this new type Sweet tomatoes Express. We really enjoy the one we normally attend in Palm Harbor and will continue going there unless some corporate expert starts making changes to this style Sweet Tomatoes.
